Last week, we started talking about 'Tim', a pseudonym for the McCombs dropout who hinted very heavily at his startup's plan to leave Austin for California in the not-so-distant future. He insisted that California offers a much friendlier culture for consumer startups like his, and at the time, asked me to keep his identity secret, because the move wasn't 100% finalized.

Around 9:15am, I got a call from Josh Baer, Professor for Longhorn Startup & Founder at Capital Factory. The highly anticipated applications for next semester's Longhorn Startup Lab are officially live, and students are scrambling to find developers, build prototypes, and figure out if people will pay money for their products.
Personnel scoop: Nick Spiller, the alum whose contributions to student startup life were so large that UT created a position just for him, is leaving his current role at Favor Delivery to join UT dropout-founded GroupThreads. Nick tells me that he decided to join the company because "GroupThreads has a profitable model that I believe we can scale into a $100M+ business." Nick is widely respected in the Austin startup community, and no doubt that this is a pivotal hire for the company.
